Back Pain in Women
No actual studies have been done on what I am about to say, but if you talk to other women, go to forums online or read any of those lifestyle or home magazines, you will notice that a lot of the females in the USA and other countries, are wondering why women get so much back pain, so much worse than men do. Some people say it’s because of the way female bodies are built versus male bodies, because of the different anatomical features present. Others say it’s because women tend to have more genetic issues than men do. Some people even say that women have more issues than men because they do more during the day. Who knows the real answer, but theories swirl around every so often as to why this happens, but no one really has a scientific answer per se. Nonetheless, the point is that women do have more issues with their back then men could ever, but the real issue here is how to prevent those problems. Once you find out the root cause of an issue, it’s a way for you to look at the problem at hand, and figure out a way to come up with an opposite result i.e.; no more or less back pain. So when it comes to questions about back pain in women, here are a few causes to help you root out the things you are doing and essentially fix them so it won’t happen again!
Pregnancy and Back Pain
Obviously when it comes to being pregnant, there is no alternative! However, if you are pregnant, and you are getting back pain, there are ways to alleviate it; safe and natural ways, without the use of harsh medications. One of the biggest reasons pregnant women have back pain is because of the baby growing inside of the expanding uterus. Yes, it’s true, this can cause back problems! An expanding uterus can actually make you off kilter or shift your center of gravity. It also tends to weaken your ab muscles, it can change your posture from great to bad, and it can put a lot of strain on your back. Expanding uteruses can also sometimes put pressure on a nerve which can cause back pain and issues as well. In addition to all these issues, being pregnant means you are carrying extra weight that you might otherwise not be used to, this causes your muscles an increased stress on its joints.
Arthritis
No one likes to hear they have arthritis, because arthritis automatically means you’re getting old right? Well, this may be the case, since you probably won’t see a 20 year old with these issues, but hey, that’s a fact of life and something that everyone over the age of 45 goes through! One of the more common types of arthritis in women is osteoarthritis. This is typical wear and tear on the joints and bones as you age. It’s nothing to be super worried about, unless it’s surpassed its usual issues. When women have osteoarthritis, the ball joints and sockets start to wear it. This often causes pain in the frontal groin area due to the stiffness of the joints.
Nighttime Back Pain
The nighttime is supposed to be a time when we finally let go of all the stresses of the day, lie down in our nice comfy beds and close our eyes to dream, right? Well, this might be true for some people. For other women, this is the most avoidable part of the day, because they know that when they go to bed and wake up in the morning they are going to be dealing with a bad back ache. Nighttime Back Pain can also happen as soon as you lay down or after you fall asleep. Usually it has less to do with your bed, and more to do with A) how you are sleeping and B) if you did anything to injure your back during the day. Make sure that when you sleep, when possible, you sleep on your sides. And make sure even then that you place a pillow between your knees. If you absolutely cannot sleep on your sides and you want to sleep on your back, make sure you place a pillow (small and slim) on your lower back, between your body and the bed, to help alleviate some stress on your spine. Also, throughout the day, we are so busy fixing this, doing that, writing this, taking care of this person, etc. we sort of run on this adrenaline high and we don’t realize we hurt our back in one instance until we actual lay down and go to sleep and our back relaxes - as well as your mind and *ouch* you feel some throbbing pain in your back. During the day, try not to be so zombie-like. You should be aware of what you are doing in terms of your back, spine, knees, etc. This will help keep back pain at bay!
